Refurbed Co-founder Shares Sustainable E-commerce Insights
Refurbed’s co-founder drives sustainable e-commerce growth through innovative practices and second-hand electronics.

The E-commerce Berlin Expo marked its 10th anniversary by interviewing influential leaders about the future of online retail. Among them was Kilian Kaminski, co-founder of refurbed, who shared insights into his journey and lessons learned.
From a broken iPhone to a sustainable e-commerce leader
Kaminski’s path into the industry began with a personal experience. His co-founder, Peter, bought a used iPhone that broke shortly after purchase, highlighting the risks of buying second-hand electronics. At the time, Kaminski was working at Amazon, where he noticed the refurbishment category lacked attention. This gap inspired him and his co-founders to create refurbed, aiming to provide reliable, sustainable options for consumers.
The company’s mission resonated with the growing demand for responsible practices and higher standards in e-commerce. Kaminski noted that customers now expect clearer communication, better-quality products, and more sustainable choices. This shift has become a driving force in the industry, pushing businesses to adapt and innovate.
Lessons from expansion and the importance of trust
Refurbed’s early success in Germany and Austria led to ambitious expansion plans. However, their initial attempts in Poland were unsuccessful, as they failed to adapt their marketing messages to the local market. This setback taught them the importance of a sophisticated market launch strategy, which has since enabled them to enter 12 European markets and serve millions of customers.
One of refurbed’s most counterintuitive strategies is encouraging customers to keep their devices longer, even if it means fewer sales. By raising refurbishment standards and offering meaningful warranties, they’ve built a level of trust that traditional marketing can’t achieve.
Building a Remote-First Team and Prioritizing Sustainability
Refurbed operates as a remote-first company, with the majority of its team working from home across Europe. This approach allows them to focus on finding the ideal match in terms of skills, experience, and culture, rather than being limited by geography.
Encouraging Conscious Consumption and Long-Term Trust
By raising refurbishment standards and offering meaningful warranties, the company builds trust and resonates with conscious consumers. This approach has led to increased customer loyalty, as people return with confidence, knowing they are making a sustainable choice.
Shifting Focus: From Fast Consumption to Sustainable Practices
Kilian reflects on the evolution of e-commerce, noting a significant shift from fast consumption to sustainability. A decade ago, excessive packaging and lack of transparency were common. Today, customers demand responsible practices, clearer communication, and higher-quality products. This change aligns with refurbed’s mission, emphasizing better-quality offerings and conscious buying decisions. The industry’s move toward sustainability is seen as one of its most positive transformations.
