Vallarta Supermarkets opened its first Duarte, California, location on Oct. 21, marking the family-owned Latin grocery chain’s 66th store. The 45,839-square-foot outlet at 1470 Mountain Avenue added 200 jobs to the community, spanning department staff to leadership positions.

The grand opening featured live entertainment and giveaways, with the first 300 customers receiving complimentary reusable grocery bags filled with products. Five local schools and charitable organizations shared a combined $10,000 in donations from the grocer.

“Duarte, you brought the love! Our grand opening was filled with excitement, smiles and so much community spirit,” the company wrote in a Facebook post. “Thank you for making us feel right at home! We were proud to share 300 grocery-filled bags and contribute $10,000 to support local organizations.”

“We’re excited to open our doors in Duarte and become part of this community,” said Allie Garcia, Vice President of Marketing at Vallarta Supermarkets, in a pre-opening press release. “With every new store, our goal is to create a welcoming destination where families can find fresh, high-quality ingredients that reflect the cultures and traditions they love.”

Six signature sauces complement select core rolls. The store also houses traditional departments including in-house corn and flour tortillas, hand-decorated cakes and pan dulce, and fresh ceviches.

The Carnicería, branded as the “Home of the Original Carne Asada,” features premium marinated meats. The Cremería showcases queso fresco and cotija, while the Pescadería and Cevichería specialize in seafood and aguachiles. Prepared foods are available through La Cocina, serving hot meals inspired by Mexican and Central American cuisine.

Additional offerings include a Juice Bar with traditional aguas frescas, a made-to-order guacamole station, and refrigerated heat-at-home meals. The Dulcería stocks candies, piñatas, and celebration supplies, while the Florería provides flower arrangements and potted plants. Delivery options include DoorDash, Uber Eats, and Instacart.

The former Best Buy space now houses Vallarta’s latest facility, which the company says reflects its commitment to community integration. Founded in 1985, Vallarta operates over 9,000 employees across California and Arizona, with this Duarte location continuing its expansion strategy focused on culturally specific retail experiences.
