FJ Team’s August Favorites

As the first days of spring begin to tiptoe in, we find ourselves reflecting on the month that was August. Much like the turning of the seasons, this month was filled with new experiences, personal indulgences, and cultural delights that have left the Fashion Journal (FJ) team feeling enriched and inspired.

Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF)

The FJ team was captivated by the Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF) this August, with the event taking over the city for most of the month. Though they only had the chance to catch a couple of films, both left a significant impact.

Super Nature, a global compilation of footage captured on old Super 8 cameras, offered a unique perspective on the animal and environmental world. The film provided a nostalgic glimpse into the past, showcasing the evolution of cinematography while highlighting the enduring beauty of the natural world. From the frenetic energy of city life to the serene tranquility of wildlife in their habitats, the film offered a global tour de force that was both mesmerizing and thought-provoking.

The second film, Mary Oliver: Saved by the Beauty of the World, was a documentary about the renowned poet and her love for nature. The film looked into Oliver’s life and work, revealing her deep connection to the natural world and how it inspired her poetry. Through interviews and readings, the documentary brought Oliver’s words to life, creating an emotional and inspiring experience that left viewers with a yearning to connect with the natural world. New Zealand Fashion Week in Auckland

The team ventured to Auckland for New Zealand Fashion Week, where they got a close-up look at some of Aotearoa’s best designers. Standout purchases included a cotton gingham trench from Commonplace and the Utility bag from Yu Mei.

One evening, the team was treated to a dinner at Queen’s rooftop, where they sampled a dirty gin martini. The smooth and sophisticated take on the classic gin and tonic was a revelation, offering a new perspective on an old favorite.

Throughout the week, the team also had the opportunity to witness the creativity and innovation of Aotearoa’s fashion industry firsthand. From bold and daring designs to elegant and timeless pieces, the runway shows showcased the diverse talent and skill of the country’s designers. With two editors celebrating their birthdays in August, the month saw some wishlist items being crossed off.
