Erdinger Alkoholfrei now accounts for roughly one‑third of the brewer’s global sales.

Erdinger Alkoholfrei, the German brewer’s alcohol-free beer launched in 2001 as an isotonic sports recovery drink, now makes up roughly a third of its worldwide sales.

UK Off-Trade Presence Expands

The line is already stocked in major UK grocery chains, including Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Morrisons and Waitrose.

Senior regional sales director Sven Groß told the outlet that the company is “looking at how the market is developing” and weighing options such as new flavors or different pack formats. He said the firm is considering a new flavor, different pack formats, or a completely different concept, but a decision has not yet been made.

Testing Functional-Drink Concepts

CEO Stefan Kreisz explained that the business is conducting experiments to extend the alcohol-free offering into the fast-growing functional-beverage segment. “It will need to fit within our brand world. We are not looking into making a Red Bull. It will be natural, cereal-based and most likely carbonated,” he noted.

Premium Positioning and Marketing Drive

The brewer aims to become the leading specialty beer brand in UK grocery shelves. A recent rollout of Erdinger Brauhaus Helles in 300 Sainsbury’s stores illustrates that ambition.

Sven noted the launch coincided with a significant expansion of the retailer’s German-beer range, giving the brand a chance to stand out as an authentic Bavarian option rather than a “pseudo-import ‘world lager’.”

He added, “The UK is a big lager market and we hope in the next few years we can further develop the distribution of the [Erdinger Brauhaus] brand.”

Sven said, “There is still a trend towards less but better, and therefore we believe there are people who will take time to really choose their beer and would rather pay a little premium for something really authentic.”

Next year the brand will launch a campaign titled “the Bavarian joy of life,” shifting focus from product features to emotional resonance. Export sales director Andreas Kahrs explained the new ads will move beyond the previous partnership with former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp, inviting consumers to “be part of our lifestyle and the joy of Bavarian life.”

Sven concluded, “We want to show that there is more to Bavarian beer than just festivals like the Oktoberfest. It’s about being outside in the mountains, meeting friends at the lakes, having BBQs and going to the beer garden.”
