Looking after all of the pieces in your jewellery collection is really important, as when you have solid gold or sterling silver jewellery and you care for it properly, it can last a lifetime or even for generations. So, cleaning, maintaining and storing your jewellery is absolutely key to prolonging its life. So, if you haven’t been prioritising your jewellery care, we’re here to help you do it!

Cleaning Your Jewellery

First up we have the tips for cleaning your jewellery properly. You should be doing this once every 6 months, or every 3 months for jewellery that you wear everyday. Start by adding warm water and a mild dish soap to a bowl and lathering slightly. Take a soft bristled toothbrush and dip it into the mixture, then scrub your jewellery gently to remove any build up of dust, dirt or things like hand cream. Avoid dipping the jewellery or soaking it in the liquid, and be very careful around delicate settings like pearls or delicate earring charms. Rinse really well and then allow to hang and dry fully, not leaving jewellery lying down in any moisture.

You should have any delicate jewellery professionally cleaned, and have more expensive prices professionally cleaned anyway once a year! This will help to keep it in the best condition possible.

Maintenance

When you are cleaning your jewellery, this is a great opportunity to also have a good look over it and make sure that there are no tangles and nothing is damaged or anything. You may also notice some jewellery may have become tarnished if it isn’t stored correctly and has been rubbing against other jewellery, so this is your opportunity to get it fixed and to improve your storage solutions. Overall, maintenance when you are cleaning is so important and it will help you to prolong the life of your jewellery even further!

Storage

Last but not least, you need to make sure you’re storing your jewellery properly. You need to keep your jewellery in a room that is a relatively stable temperature and is low on moisture, so somewhere like a bedroom is ideal whereas a bathroom with direct sunlight is not ideal at all. You should have it in storage that protects it from dust and is lined with a material so it’s nice and soft. Anything that is prone to tangling like necklaces or bracelets should be hung up where possible! Then you could have smaller compartments for things like your flat back earrings and rings. Overall, making sure your jewellery is spread out and protected from moisture or dust is ideal for your storage. The rest is down to you!

We love drawer storage if you have the space, as you can easily spread everything out and see everything clearly. If you’re short on space, we love stackable square storage, so you can fit much more in but also maximise the space you have, ensuring everything is nicely spread out without wasting much needed space! Overall, storage is just as important as cleaning and maintenance, so make sure to include these stages in your jewellery cleaning steps.
